- Immediately change default credentials to a strong password.
- Create a dedicated admin account and, if supported, a separate less-privileged user for daily viewing.
- Enable two-factor authentication if available.
- Update firmware to the latest version from the manufacturer.
- Reconfigure network: place the DVR behind a router firewall, use a static IP or DHCP reservation if needed, avoid exposing the DVR directly to the internet; use VPN or secure remote access options.
- Re-enable recording schedules and test remote access.
- Keep a secure written/digital record of the new credentials in a password manager.
- On the login screen, look for a small question mark (?), a key icon, or a link that says "Forget Password?"
