How to Find an RDS License Key

Remote Desktop Services (RDS) licensing for Windows servers can be confusing. This article explains where RDS license keys come from, how to locate them, and best practices for managing them. It covers both Remote Desktop Services Client Access Licenses (RDS CALs) purchased through Microsoft Volume Licensing, and keys used for activating RDS on a License Server. Steps:

  1. On your current RDS License Server, open Server Manager.
  2. Go to Tools > Remote Desktop Services > RD Licensing Manager.
  3. Right-click your license server and select "Review Configuration."
  4. Look for "Installed License Key Packs."
  5. Double-click a key pack. The Key Pack ID will be revealed.

Microsoft does NOT store your 25-character product key after activation. However, they will reissue a Key Pack ID. On your current RDS License Server, open Server Manager
