When Aragorn silently decapitates the emissary, it is not an act of rage but of brutal mercy—killing a lie before it can poison the hearts of his army. The Extended Edition does not fix what was broken (because very little was). It completes what was merely suggested. It turns a trilogy of films into a single, 12-hour novel. It allows you to sit in the sadness of Theoden’s death a little longer, the terror of Shelob’s lair a little deeper, and the joy of the coronation (where Aragorn sings, a scene restored from the book) a little brighter.
