Macrium Reflect no longer offers a dedicated "Free Edition" as of late 2023
Q: Can I run the installed version from a USB without booting?
A: No. The installed version requires running Services, SCSI controllers, and the VSS framework. You cannot simply copy reflect.exe to a USB and run it on a different PC. That will crash.
To maintain a fair assessment, it is important to acknowledge the limitations of the free portable version. The most significant is the lack of Rapid Delta Restore and incremental forever backups, which were exclusive to the paid Home edition. Additionally, the free version does not support ReFS (Resilient File System) or Windows Server operating systems. The free license also explicitly excludes commercial use in a business environment. However, for a home user or a technician performing occasional data recovery, these restrictions rarely pose a problem. The quality of the core imaging and restore functions remains entirely intact.
However, the community uses the term "portable" to refer to a specific, powerful feature: Macrium Reflect Rescue Media.
