What Works
- Toni Garrido’s Orfeu: Unlike the dreamy Bruno Mello (1959) or the desperate Breno Mello (1959), Garrido’s Orfeu is a magnetic, muscular favelado. His voice soars, and his presence is both godlike and fragile. You believe he could charm the sun, yet you also see his fatal flaw: pride.
- The Violence: The original’s death felt like a cruel joke of fate. Here, it’s a gritty, inevitable collision between love and a drug lord’s ego. When Mira murders Eurídice, it’s not with a rock in an alley – it’s by throwing her from a height, shattering her against the favela’s concrete.
- Music: Caetano Veloso’s soundtrack reframes the myth. The samba is not background but plot. Orfeu composes as he lives, and the final scene – a devastated Orfeu carrying Eurídice’s body through the favela while the bateria plays a frenzied, ironic samba – is cinema’s most brutal critique of carnival as escapism.
